I could name a bajillion things I would rather do than diet and exercise. I don’t hate a lot of things, but I would almost say I hate those two things. I recently lost some weight and a lot of you have noticed and have been asking me what’s my “secret.” Well, it’ll no longer be a secret because I’m revealing it to you now! But sadly, there is no secret to how I lost weight. Just a few tips I learned along the way. My photos show that I am not some super fit, super model looking woman. So I can’t tell you how to get a six pack and get extremely toned when I’m not even at that level! But I can tell you how I lost a few pounds without hating my life.
The summer of 2013 I realized that I had some weight I had to loose so I had no choice but to diet and exercise. So I renewed my membership at the gym and stocked my kitchen filled with healthy food. That summer I lost one pound. One itty bitty pound. I almost lost all hope until I tried something new this summer. And lost 15 pounds. Here’s how I did it:
1) I don’t do anything that I don’t want to do. Last year, I would go to the gym and use the treadmill and elliptical and the painful stairmaster. But I was bored out of my mind. Five minutes would pass and it would feel like half an hour! I would say to myself “I’m going to the gym for an hour today!” But it would never happen. After 30 minutes I would be so bored out of my mind that I would just leave. This summer, I knew I had to stay active to loose weight, but I made sure I enjoyed it! I started hiking, which has a way better view than anything you would see at the gym. I took dance classes which felt more like a party than a work out! And on the days that I absolutely did not want to work out, I went shopping! Walking around the mall for hours is exercise too 🙂 Since the weather has been nice, I go to the biggest outdoor mall around me. Outdoor malls usually require more walking than indoor malls. I also just prefer being outdoors!
2) I don’t eat anything that I think is disgusting. I know that sounds bad but let me explain! Some healthy foods are just so bland. I’m sorry, but I’m not going to force myself to eat something that’s making me cringe. I tried that last year and I had to eat a whole box of See’s candy to get that bland taste out of my mouth, so there went my diet! I recently did some research online and looked for recipes that still had vegetables and were low fat, but still had some flavor to them. And if I’m still really craving a greasy pizza, I would eat a salad with it to make sure I don’t eat more than one slice! So I recommend everyone try different healthy recipes until you find a few that you actually want to eat. Because nothing is more discouraging than eating flavorless food. Nourishing yourself should be enjoyable!
3) Alcohol is the enemy! I am not much of a drinker, I probably will only have one glass of wine a week, sometimes a pina colada instead 🙂 But when I lived in San Francisco I lived near every popular bar and club and I was drinking a lot. That caused me to blow up like a balloon. I know people who drink a lot, and they are never loosing that five pounds they keep talking about. On top of that, alcohol makes you very hungry and I have seen people, including myself, devour a large pizza to themselves after a night of drinking. It’s not pretty.
About a month ago I ran into a friend I haven’t seen in almost two year. And she looked really good! I asked her what her secret was and she said she got rid of alcohol, that’s it! That made me realize that another reason why I feel and look better is because I no longer drink as much as well. Like I said, I still drink once in a while and I know a lot my friends love wine, especially since we live so close to the wine country! But limiting your drinks will make a huge impact.
My methods obviously won’t work for some people. Like I said, I’m not very knowledgeable in health and fitness. I am just sharing how I lost weight and I’m hoping it’ll help someone out there, even if it’s just one person. Leave me a comment if you have any other questions!
